Central State residence advisors and student leaders team up and host Womanhood Wednesday every other week in Willamson Hall. Female students of all classifications are welcome to attend. The program is designed for female students to bond, vent, and speak their minds.
“We facilitate a conversation, and we want it to just flow naturally and just be a way for us to bond with each other,” Resident Advisor Ebenie Ford said. “Not so much of a panel feel or somebody standing in front of you like a teacher. It’s not like that.”
Organizers determine a topic for each Womanhood Wednesday and distribute the topic to students via Twitter. Students sit in a circle symbolizing that everyone is equal and that everyone’s voice matters.
“I had a lot of fun last Womanhood Wednesday. I’m coming to the next one period,” Sophomore Trinity Sheffield said.
Womanhood Wednesday also creates networking opportunities. Organizers introduce participants to female faculty and staff -- people who can help the students through their collegiate journey. One staff member spoke to students about sexual assault and harassment. Another staff person, Karla Harper, the director of Career Services, spoke to students about finding internships.
“Students I’ve met on Womanhood Wednesdays and any day of the week are more than welcome to talk to me about job opportunities on and off campus,” Harper said. “The girls come to me to clean those resumes up!”
The organizers of Womanhood Wednesdays have collaborated this year with the organizers of another forum, Man Up Monday. The first joint event was “We’re over it,” a discussion of romantic relationships between men and women.
