Where is the drumline?

Updated: Mar 5, 2020

Central State’s pep band has performed at most of this year’s basketball games, but its popular drum line has been missing in action. The pep band now features a single drum set.

“I was looking forward to being in the pep band. I’m sure I’m not the only one that feels this way,” said freshman Jakaria Pitts, a member of the drumline. “If it is possible, I would like to play during basketball season next year.”

Band Director Ramon Key said that he wants the pep band to compete against bands from other universities and to compete in an NCAA sanctioned event the band must have 30-35 horn players and a drum set. Key said that band could get a chance to perform at a playoff game if band members compete.

“I’m looking forward to having the drumline back for Senior Night to enhance the excitement and atmosphere, but the band and I are enjoying the drum set this season,” Key said.

Key also said that the band gains a better balance with the drum set, and band members gain a better understanding of rhythm. They are able to stay on the beat more easily. He said that just as the band is able to adapt to changes, so is the audience.

Drum line freshmen are still discouraged about not being able to play during this season. “I expected to have so much fun this spring,” Pitts said. “I understand it is for the betterment of the performances."

The Central State Invincible Marching Marauders play at most, if not all, of the football and basketball games. They entertain the crowd through music and chants. For more information about the band, contact Ramon Key at rkey@centralstate.edu.
