Central State women are wearing “wordy” hairclips spring term in a flash back trend from the 90s.
“My hair pins sell out so fast,” said senior Diananna Sears, the owner of Dainty-galore. “Over the course of just a few months, they have become very popular.”
Today’s butterfly clips are colorful, shiny, and expressive. They come in many shapes, such as a heart, or angel, and are often inscribed with aspirational words such as “beautiful,” “boss,” and “queen.”
Student entrepreneurs have made the plastic clips affordable for other students. You can buy a six-pack of clips for $2. However, designer styles from Gucci and Louis Vuitton can run as high as $400 per clip.
Student Asia Jackson has a total of 25 stylish hair clips that she purchased on campus. Jackson wears them for practical reasons. “Theses clips are the perfect solution for making a basic hairstyle look slightly more tamed,” she said.
The hair clip trend took off last summer after a number of popular celebrities, such as Kylie Jenner and Ariana Grande began wearing them. Later in the fall, several models wore the butterfly clips at the Chanel fashion show in Paris.
Butterfly clips were invented in the mid 1800s. They have been popular with young girls for decades. For many girls, butterfly clips are their introduction to the world of fashion.
