First ever dance showcase

Updated: Mar 5, 2020

The first dance showcase hosted by the Central State University Dancing Belles will occur March 26, 2020, in the Paul Robeson Cultural and Performing Arts Center at 7 p.m. The showcase will feature six dance groups from Central State and two from Wilberforce University.

“I’ve always wanted to do this and our former director Sylvia G. Kelley wanted to have an exhibition, so I just decided to fulfill our goal,” said Melody Bryant, captain of the Dancing Belles. “You can expect different styles of dance from each organization.”

Bryant says that the purpose of this event is to give students exposure to a variety of dance organizations.

Each dance team will have seven to ten minutes to showcase its talent and style of dance. Five judges will critique the performances. Dance groups will be judged on their foundation, difficulty of movement, character, personality, style, musicality, originality, creativity, execution and showmanship.

“I am looking forward to showing people that High Definition is here and that we are coming full force,” said Dana Wright, one of the founders of the CSU dance group High Definition. Wright said his team is preparing rigorously for the competition and “cleaning up” everyone’s dance moves. He said High Definition focuses on two styles of dance: majorette and hip-hop.

The dance showcase will also feature several modeling organizations and a student doing spoken word. The showcase is open to the public. Pre-sale wristbands will cost two dollars. Tickets will cost $5 at the door.
