Facilities workers confirm what many students have long suspected: Many residence halls on campus have a mold problem.
“It’s true. There are more than a few rooms with mold,” maintenance worker Chris Taylor said. “Our teams are doing everything to tackle these issues.”
Former student Jamerah Reeves said she moved into Green Residence Hall as a sophomore. She noticed mold on her walls. One day, she noticed spotted mold on her purse. She immediately reported it to Residence Advisor Karen Johnson. “She was frightened and uncomfortable,” Johnson said. “She immediately got moved.” Reeves eventually transferred to another school in Columbus. The mold problem was one of several issues that made Reeves unhappy.
Williamson Hall Coordinator Sarah Gaines said that the residence halls are “thoroughly cleaned.” Johnson said the same thing. “I can honestly say that Residence Life works hard to make this a safe environment for the students. These buildings are old and that’s the problem,” Johnson said.
Students should fill out a maintenance request under the “my housing” tab on MyCSU if they spot a mold problem. They will need to go to the “handle your business” page first and then access the “my housing” tab to file the request.
“Residents are immediately moved out of rooms with mold, and I can proudly say that the issue has gotten way better,” Taylor said. “A lot can still be improved. We are working on it.”
