Community Garden sprouts on SR

Central State’s new community garden will be completed fall term.

“It is intended to be an educational piece primarily for students, faculty, and staff, but it will also be opened to the community,” said Cato Mayberry, special assistant to the vice-president of administration and finance.

Workers have nearly completed a large garden shed, concrete walkway, and gate on the property located on SR 42 across from the university’s main entrance. They are continuing to prepare the site for planting. The garden will consist of eight raised beds for vegetation. A path will meander through the garden and feature native trees and shrubs.

The university is looking for volunteers to help maintain the garden. Everyone is welcome to participate. “You have those who are beginners, and you have those who may come from a farming background,” Mayberry said. “We intend on covering the whole gamut!” Mayberry said the university hopes to educate students about food production.

“Believe it or not, there are a lot of students that think produce comes from the grocery store,” he said. “You also have to understand that not everyone grew up in an environment that allowed an opportunity to grow things.”

The university will spend approximately about $750,000 on the new garden, which is an 1890 Land Grant project.
