24th Annual Communication Week

Central State University will host the 24th annual Communication Week April 8– 12, 2019.

“The purpose of this week is to introduce students to different topics in media and a variety of professionals in it. This week gives students an opportunity to meet people for great career advice and to increase their professional network,” Communications Professor Michael Gormley said.

Students are helping schedule speakers for the weeklong event. “Students play a big role in helping plan for our Communication Week,” said Dr. Lovette Chinwah, director of the Communication Program. Chinwah is teaching a one-credit practicum this term, in which students plan the seminar. “Students who major in Communications are required to take this course at some point,” Chinwah said.

Student Terrionna Bryan is taking the practicum this term. “We work hard to prepare for this event as we meet for class once a week. We try to go find great candidates to present to students throughout the week,” Bryan said.

A variety of guests will speak to students, including a number of Central State graduates working in media. Playwright Tyler will give a two-day workshop on playwriting. Graduate Scot Kirk will speak about his career at the Columbus Dispatch.

Communication Major Robert Corbin is looking forward to a great week. “This week means a lot to me as it is an opportunity to get involved and meet new people,” he said. “It allows me to gain more knowledge in the media field and to know that someone who walked these same halls as me is doing good for themselves.”

Communication Week is free and open to the public. Sessions are held in the Communications Center. “Students have gotten internships and job opportunities because of this week and should be prepared with a resume,” Gormley said.
