Will CSU add more sports?

Updated: Mar 4, 2020

Central State University has announced that it will soon have a men’s volleyball team. That announcement has some people wondering whether the university will add additional sport programs in the future.

“I feel that if CSU was to add additional sport teams that would get the support of almost every student on campus and Xenia natives like myself,” sports fan Sean Payton said.

“We will support anything that’s pushing the university forward.”

The chair of the university’s Health and Human Performance Department, Rosie Turner, said that adding new programs is costly. Every team requires coaches, equipment, uniforms, and a budget for travel.

Turner said that the university had a swimming team back in the 1960s, and it still has a natatorium complete with a swimming pool and bleachers for spectators. Howard University is currently the only Historically Black University with a swim team.

Central State also had a wrestling team in the past. There has been talk of establishing a golf or tennis team. Track athlete David Williams said that adding new sports will help the university build its enrollment. “It would be great if Central State could add additional sport teams, because it could attract more student athletes from all over the country,” Williams said.
