Central State University students complain that some students are using the university’s learning management system, Schoology, to engage in cyberbullying and to complain about the university.
“I’ve seen students cursing on Schoology about the problems on campus,” psychology major Syera Jeffries said.
Schoology is a learning management system for students enrolled in K-12 or higher education institutions. It allows users to create, manage, and share content and resources pertaining to classes and to reach out to other students and professors for information.
“We weren’t able to express ourselves on Blackboard, so now that we have Schoology it's more for us students,” business major Juwan Walker said.
Students communictate with each other for all sorts of reasons. “I usually post on Schoology to see if someone is selling a specific book that I may need for a class,” criminal justice major Sabrina Mosley said. “Also, if someone has lost something, I’ll post on Schoology to make it known that I found someone's belongings.”
The problem is that students don’t always behave appropriately online. “Sometimes, I want to ask certain things on Schoology, but the students here can sometimes be judgemental,” biology major Trinity Hayes said.
Engineering major Tysean Omou said students often complain about the university on Schoology, which he says can be a good thing. “A lot of our problems are swept under the rug, but when all the students come together on Schoology, we get a majority of our problems solved and a lot of our questions begin to get answered,” Omou said.
Admininistrators in the the Office of Instructional Technology are monitoring students posts. If they see a problem, the will delay release of the post. Director JJ Medastin informed students in one summer school class that he was reviewing their posts.
Medastin is considering his options for regulating the online space. “I believe there should be some sort of penalty that takes place when our students here speak inappropriately (on Schoology),” he said. Medastin said students who misbehave should be given community service to perform on campus.
