The Bahamian Takeover

Gold Torch Writer

It all started with the Invincible Marching Marauders taking a trip to the Bahamas in 2014. Since that day, the Bahamian population at Central State University has risen every year. It is now 2019 and the total number of Bahamians has hit 90.

With the growing number of Bahamian students, they are accomplishing more and more every semester. In this school year alone, Central State University had its first Bahamian Drum Major, first Bahamian Ms. Central State University, first Bahamian Ms. Black and Gold, and the first Bahamian to become part of the Delta Xi chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc.

Other Bahamians are excelling in the classroom. Sophomore Bradley Wright has a 4.0 grade point average, which is not uncommon among Bahamian students. Every Bahamian lives in the two honor dorms, and they don’t live there because that’s where they were assigned, they actually earned the right to live there. Bradley said he works hard in his classes. His family won’t accept a 3.5 g.p.a. and that drives him to succeed.

Another Bahamian student, Doniska Taylor, refuses to miss class. “School and class is almost like muscle memory to me. It doesn’t feel right if I miss class,” she said.

The Bahamians are coming to Central State with a mindset of working hard and being successful. They are starting a new standard on campus, and hopefully the rest of the school can rise to the challenge to not only meet this standard but to go above and beyond.
